ATEX refers to two separate (but related) European Union (EU) Directives 94/9/EC The “Equipment” Directive • Concerned with the manufacture and sale of Ex Equipment 1999/92/EC The “Use” Directive • Concerned with Classification of Hazardous Areas and the correct selection, installation, inspection and maintenance of Ex Equipment the ATEX 137 "workplace" Directive 1999/92/EC - Minimum requirements for improving the safety and health protection of workers potentially at risk from explosive atmospheres. Note: The ATEX 95 "equipment" Directive 94/9/EC, was withdrawn on 20 April 2016 when it was replaced by ATEX 114 Directive 2014/34/EU. These four schemes are to ensure that every aspect of the products conforms to the IECEx standard, from the quality of the Ex equipment itself to the competency of the personnel who will be handling such equipment in hazardous environments. On the other hand, the ATEX certification only consists of 2 directives: ATEX 95 and ATEX 137.
